Around and about on campus and in York

Especially when you first arrive everything can be confusing but sometimes people leave York never having seen or accessed some of what it offers both on campus and in the City. There is much more to campus than lecture rooms and more to the City than shops, pubs and clubs. Hopefully what follows may help you explore and use some of them.
The Quiet Place

The Quiet Place stands in the Yew Tree Garden behind Heslington Hall and is available to all members of the University. There is a private garden and downstairs room which are reserved for just being quiet - entry is through the gate and the current key-code for the gate and the room is 11223#. The upstairs room is bookable via Room Bookings and the key available from Derwent Porters.

Prayer spaces

Whilst York is a secular university it recognises that Faith is an important part of life to many students and staff. The University provides a number of Multi-Faith spaces and you can find details by clicking here.

Shrine of Saint Margaret Clitherow

This small prayerful space stands in the middle of one of the busiest tourist and shopping streets in York. It is located in what is believed to have been the house where St. Margaret Clitherow lived. In her day it would have been equally as busy as The Shambles was the street where all the butchers shops were located. It is well worth a visit - is is open every day so it is always possible to pop in for a moment of prayer. You can read a little more here. Each year close to the start of term a group of students from the University gathers for Mass in the Shrine (in 2013 this will be at 7.30pm on Tuesday 8th October).

The Bar Convent

The Bar Convent takes its name from Micklegate Bar which is the main gateway into the city (in York bars are gates and gates are streets!). Located just outside the Bar this convent is the oldest working convent in Britain and is home to a community of sisters belonging to the Congregation of Jesus who were founded in York by a great Yorkshire woman, Mary Ward. That this was done at a time when it was illegal in Britain to belong to or practise the Catholic faith is remarkable.

York Tyburn

The Tyburn (place of public execution) stood on the main road out of York alongside what is now the racecourse (still called the Knavesmire). Its site is marked by a paved area and an engraved stone. In penal days many Catholics were executed here for their Faith.
